Language

Dzongkha (the official language) is also referred to as Bhutanese. English is also widely spoken and prevalent on tourist posters and signs.

Religion

Bhutan is a Buddhist nation. A majority of Bhutanese people follow the Drukpa Lineage of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism.

Weather

In the summer months, the weather in Bhutan can become quite unpredictable due to the monsoon of South Asia. The rainfall in September can be extremely heavy, thus quite hazardous.

Food

Bhutanese delicacies are rich with spicy chillies and cheese but are often tempered to the palate of visitors. All of our selected hotels and lodges offer Indian, Chinese, Continental and Bhutanese cuisines to cater for everyone's tastes. Hotels tend to serve a mixture of vegetarian and non-vegetarian items buffet-style. Vegetarian meals can also be served upon request, please let your agent know so they can inform the accommodation provider ahead of time.

Security

Bhutan is a relatively safe country with one of the lowest crime rates in the world. You'll discover that Bhutanese people are very welcoming, hospitable and helpful. As a foreign visitor though, we strongly advise that you exercise due caution at all times.

Photography

Official photography restrictions are uncommon in Bhutan, so you can take photos almost everywhere. However, often the Bhutanese can be camera-shy, so use your discretion and when in doubt either ask verbally first,or by means of gesturing. The photographing of Dzongs, monasteries and temples is sometimes frowned upon so please check with your guide first.

Shopping

Shops usually operate 7-days between 9am and 8pm. Markets are a regular attraction for shoppers looking for great samples of local clothing and jewellery.

Entry Permit/Visa

With exceptions to Indian, Bangladeshis and Maldivian nationals, all other tourists must secure and carry a valid visa at all times. We recommend you treat it like your passport and keep both documents together in case you're requested by officials to show your visa and prove your identity.

Route Permit

Foreigners travelling beyond Dochula pass to central and western Bhutan require a valid Route Permit.

Customs

The Bhutanese authorities strictly monitor all exports. The export of any kind of religious antiques from the kingdom is strictly prohibited. Travellers are permitted to bring in only personal electronic devices, and also a reasonable quanitity of cigarettes and alcohol for personal consumption. The following amounts of restricted products may be imported into Bhutan per person: 200 cigarettes / 50 cigars / 250 grams of tobacco, 1 litre bottle of spirits, 250ml of perfume/cologne (eau de toilette). Bhutan is a non-smoking country - visitors may smoke at designated places only - please ask your guide.

Telephones & Internet Access

Telecommunications infrastructure is highly developed and efficient in Bhutan. The international dial code is +975. If you wish to bring your own mobile phone and/or internet-connected smart device, please consult the device manufacturer and roaming network supplier for up-to-date information about compatibility.

Electricity

220 volts 50Hz AC. Standard Indian round pin sockets are most common. If you are bringing any electrical devices with you, be sure to also bring a suitable adapter for this socket type. Adapters are commonly available at electrical retailers.

Clothing

Throughout the spring and summer, from May to September, cotton clothes are perfectly suitable. Though it is still wise to bring a wool sweater or a light jacket to shield from cool breezes.

Currency

Currency

The Bhutanese currency is called Ngultrum [Nu] and is kept at par with the Indian Rupee.

It's important to note that INR (lndian Rupees) denominations of 500 and 1000 are not accepted in Bhutan.

ATMs are located within all main towns throughout Bhutan. ATMs allow money to be withdrawn using a Visa card or MasterCard. In addition, POS (Point of Sale) electronic transaction services are available in selected establishments.

If you wish to exchange US or Australia dollars, please ask your Guide, or go to a currency conversion service in your home country prior to departure. When making foreign cash exchanges, it may be necessary to show your passport.
